About Me

Freelance Writer, Copywriter, Ghostwriter, and Editor

(A BRIEF RUNDOWN)

I’m an occasional blogger for TheAtlantic.com. My freelance writing has appeared in Four Seasons, Good Housekeeping, Maxim, Museums Magazine, Stuff, Time Out New York, TV Guide, US Airways Magazine, and elsewhere.

I’ve often been a staff writer or contributing editor. I’ve contributed to five books. My travel writing was praised in The New York Times.

I’m a highly flexible freelance writer who tries to exceed the expectations of my clients. I frequently write about books, culture, movies, travel, and environmental issues.

As the son of a diplomat, I’m keenly interested in world politics and have written about that, too. Some of that writing is on my Editorial Clips page.

As a copywriter, I’ve worked with top clients such as The New Yorker, Condé Nast Traveler, The Atlantic, and TheAtlantic.com to produce advertorials and marketing materials for a variety of top clients.

I work as a ghostwriter for busy CEOs and executives. I can write those newsletters, white papers, blog entries, and letters—even write those letters of recommendation you’ve been asked to produce but don’t have the time to write. More information about what I can do for you is on my Copywriter page.

I can edit your magazine or newsletter on a project basis. I’m a former special sections editor  at The New Yorker, managing editor at Forbes Inc., and senior editor at The New York Times Company. I’m at present a senior editor at Guernica. I’ve written and edited  hundreds of articles and advertorials.  I’ve also worked with difficult, complex topics and direct mail.

I was a fact-checker for years and was even called upon to train other fact-checkers.  I have more about that on my Editorial Services page.

Books I’ve Contributed To: A nonfiction anthology, New York Calling (lauded by Publishers Weekly); travel essay anthology, Museyon Guides Film + Travel (my essay in particular was praised by The New York Times). My fiction has been anthologized in Best of Our Stories (forthcoming) and In Our Own Words: Voices of a Generation.

Copywriter Credits (Print and Web): The Atlantic (advertorials for Luminato Arts Festival, the Irish Tourist Board, PBS, and others); Condé Nast Traveler (advertorials for Arizona, Phoenix, a cruise line, and others); and The New Yorker (I worked there eight years. I’ve been a copywriter for such clients as: Barbados, Barnes & Noble, Curaçao, Mexico, Greater Miami, Random House, Scholastic, Spain, and the U.S. Virgin Islands). I’ve also been an SEO copywriter for a fashion accessories company and Nissan.

Editorial Staff Experience: For eight years, I was a special sections editor at The New Yorker. At Forbes Inc., I edited a celebrity-oriented glossy and was the group managing editor in charge of eight to ten quarterlies and a staff of about 28. At The New York Times Company, I was a research editor and a fact-checker. Before that, I was a proofreader at Newbridge Communications (now BookSpan) and a proofreader and fact-checker at PC Magazine.

Today, I am the Fiction Editor at Guernica: A Magazine of Art and Politics. My work there has been praised by Esquire, which called it one of the five best online literary sites on the Internet. Guernica is a three-time PEN World Voices participant, and has an average of 100,000 unique visitors. As fiction editor, I’ve published works by Jesse Ball, Rivka Galchen, Francisco Goldman, Sam Lipsyte, and Ben Marcus.

Awards and Recognition: Guernica fiction has been selected for the Dzanc Books 2009 and 2010 Best of the Web collections. A fiction piece I found in the Guernica “slush pile” was awarded “Africa’s Booker Prize,” the 2009 Caine Prize for African Writing.

My fiction has been awarded various fiction-writing scholarships—most notably to the Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference and the Summer Literary Seminars held in St. Petersburg, Russia. My short stories have been published (or is forthcoming) in Noö Journal, Our Stories Literary Journal, elimae, InDigest, Wigleaf, and many other magazines. It’s also been anthologized twice and nominated for various fiction awards. In the late 1990s, I had a script optioned by a production company associated with Columbia Pictures.

Other Experience: I’ve been writing and editing forever: in the sixth grade, I founded the school paper. In high school, I was the sports editor. For my college paper, I was an investigative reporter. While in college, I uncovered systematic waste in the university administration that earned the praise of the local journalism community (and oddly, even Ralph Nader who at that point was still a consumer advocate). I eventually became the paper’s first arts and features editor.

While at Columbia University, I had a screenplay optioned. I also wrote and directed two sync-sound 16mm films that played various festivals, including Chicago International.
