Wi-Fi: Shutting It Off in the Coffeehouses?

According to The Los Angeles Times, some coffeehouses are shutting off the Wi-Fi. Is that a trend? If true, I’ve mixed feeling about it. At my local coffeehouse, it’s hard to get a seat because of the study hall atmosphere. But I freelancers need a place to go (that is, those who can’t afford such places as The Writers Room).

I’m wondering if this is one of those “trends” create by an ambitious writer looking for clips. Are people really shutting down the Wi-Fi? Or is The Los Angeles Times hoping people will read the paper in the cafe, like they used to?
